Star Platforms provide powered access to draping and rigging provider for an event at the ExCel Centre in London

UK powered access rental company, Star Platforms, provided 10 scissor lifts and seven articulated boom lifts to the project which took place at the ExCeL Centre in London.

The event at the ExCeL, which although is live for only one day takes four days to build, took place across 11 Halls including the main auditorium and is one of the biggest events of its kind the venue hosts each year. The production company work regularly with the draping and rigging provider on large scale events such as this where an extensive build is required.

Tom, Technical and Project Manager for the draping and rigging provider explained: “This is a big job we do every year and we always call upon Star Platforms to provide powered access. To complete the draping and rigging we required nearly 20 machines in total, and Star were able to provide them all making the whole process much easier for us as we only had to deal with one supplier. Kellan is always really helpful and works with us to get the machines we need delivered into London on time which is no easy feat when there are this many involved”.

The customer hired seven boom lifts and 10 scissor lifts in total to utilise during the project. The Niftylift Height Rider articulating boom lifts provided ranged from a working height of 15m to 28m providing the flexibility the company needed to complete the variety of jobs on site. The bi-energy nature of the engines mean they can be used indoors, and all the machines come with non-marking tyres which are essential for works of this nature.

Several scissor lifts were also provided, from the 7.8m working height Skyjack 3219 electric scissor lift, to the 11.75m working height Skyjack 4632 electric scissor lift. The company also hired two 12.06m working height Genie 3384RT diesel scissor lift’s that provided a working height of 12.6m, platform width of 2.13m (plus an extending deck) and lifting capacity of 1134kg. This provided them with enough flexibility and working space to take the drapes to height and then hang to create the room dividers.

Kellan Macdougall, Hire Co-Ordinator, Star Platforms, commented: “It’s always a pleasure to help Tom with this project and we were pleased to once again get the call. We all pull together to ensure we get the extensive range of machines booked out, serviced and inspected, and delivered on time – it truly is a team effort.”
